iPad Fever: Review of iPad + JAVOedge Cherry Blossom Axis Case

Aside from summer work, travel, etc. I've been busy playing with my new Apple iPad. Yep, I took the plunge. Aside from the ZOMG! factor, it's been an investment for school and freelance work. If you live in New York, you know that you carry your life in your bag – laptop, makeup bag, notes, food/coffee, etc. It all adds up. So far, it's holding up as a laptop substitute and is a breeze to throw inside my bag (along with a Bluetooth keyboard) and use to type up class notes, work emails, etc. on-the-go.

I was so excited I documented its unboxing when I laid hands on it.

Here is my iPad ready to play/work.

Now, I'm going to share with you my favorite apps to use for the iPad along with the case I'm rocking with it. Most are free which is perfect when you want to get up-to-speed in testing your iPad for your needs/wants.

Must-have Apps:
eReader Apps: Kindle, iBooks
Fun Wow! Apps: FlipBoard, (streams Twitter/Facebook updates), Google Earth
Handy: Epicurious (Cooking), EverNote (writing), NPR (listening + reading), Adobe Idea Board (sketching)
Entertainment: ComicZeal (reading manga), CrunchyRoll (watching anime, dramas), CineXPlayer (watching my AVI formatted movies)

So, when you're sporting the hottest device around town, you know you're not going to want an ordinary case to show it off. Hello, JAVOedge Cherry Blossom Axis Case (Twilight Purple). Full disclosure: I do freelance work for JAVOedge. When my boss heard I picked up an iPad, he offered me a choice of cases as a way to congratulate me (he's a total tech purchase enabler).

I've been scouting iPad cases already but the JAVOedge Cherry Blossom Axis Case had me on 2 key parts:

1) The Japanese cherry blossom print is awesome, eye catching, and very distinctive.

2) The functionality of the case itself is killer. The case can flip your iPad into landscape or portrait mode and can be set to tilt at 3 different angles. That is SO major for someone who's as OCD-ADD multitasking as I am. Want to watch movies? Flip it to landscape mode. Want to read manga? Flip to portrait mode. Need to type at a good angle? Set it at preferred tilt. I love having choices and so far, I haven't seen a similar case that offers me the pretty femme looks with the practical functionality.

So, I had to share my iPad love with a review of my iPad and its new case because, really, the two go hand-to-hand as any iPad user will know. The case makes my life easier when handling the iPad. I don't get folks who just handle their iPad naked. At 1.5 lbs., the iPad is a bit heavy to handle for a long length of time. Using a case that has a kickstand prop helps me reduce neck strain which is a big deal for someone who is addicted to their computer/Internet as much as I am.

Pro's: Looks. It doesn't look like a typical "tech" case. Ability to flip iPad into landscape, portrait mode. Fabric exterior makes it soft/nice to touch.

Con's: The rubber steps can leave some smudges on iPad screen. Easily wiped away but it could be more thoughtfully integrated into the case. You may need to break the case in to get it to work to your liking (not so much a biggie).

Overall: The iPad is a great choice if you're looking for a light-weight alternative to a netbook. It's an eReader, movie/music player, and has some convenient uses due to its form. With a blue tooth keyboard, you can easily type up notes for meetings and it's great for demo'ing photographs, sites, etc. if you're in the creative business. I definitely love my JAVOedge Axis Case -- it's versatile, attractive, and really functional at being able to set it at portrait or landscape mode. At $40, it beats Apple's official iPad case! if you're interested, they have other designs for girls and guys at Amazon.

What have I been doing lately? Well, aside from checking ulzzhang, beauty Tumblr blogs, and tackling the world, I came across Pinterst via Oh! Joy blog. Pinterest is a "place to share collections of things you love -- whether that's food, art, clothing, or books." I love the picture-driven format where every item gets a neat white border and label. A virtual pin-up board which is ALOT easier then how I would just save random photos to my hard-drive and forget where I found the original image source.

Who wants to travel? I do, I do! Of course, the fantasy of travel is doing it in style. I love daydreaming about destinations, how I would pack, what to wear, keep myself comfortable on a luxurious, international flight (oh to win the lotto...). I spend alot of time fussing but to me, packing adds up the fun to it (when its for pleasure and not for work!).

Summertime is here and the living is easy, as the song goes. Cashing in on relaxation time since I'm off from school. What does this mean? I discovered Lush Products and am still dabbling in nail art. This time, I'm sporting bubblegum pink nails with white french tip.

Surprisingly fragrant and bubblelicious. I love the Frosty Glitter, it turns everything pink, shiny, and perfumed in a non-overwhelming way. The Amandopondo is a delicate rose scent that's a nice floral accent. Rather than crumble everything into the bath, I take chunks at a time so I don't waste it all in one go (not that decadent!). They are a perfect indulgent gift to yourself.

After looking through their artist series, I discovered this LA-based artist whose artwork is a sensual mix of traditional Japanese mythology, manga, Art Nouveau, and natural organic scenes. In using natural wood as her canvas, the warmth gleams through her artwork and adds a special ambiance to it. I love the delicate, moody atmosphere her art exhibits. Truly beautiful.

This is a special post right in time for Valentine's Day. I'm not the sappy type but I have to say I was really happy when my BF arranged a surprise delivery of my favorite flowers – ranunculus flowers mixed with roses and tulips– to me at school. Since I've been hard at work, away from him, it felt really, really, really good to know he was thinking of me from afar.

You see, I'm the chatty type and my tall, quiet, stoic BF has heard me ramble on and on about how much I adore peonies and ranunculus flowers but he usually keeps mum (I can really count on one hand how many time he's given me flowers). This time, I was floored. This bouquet of flowers brought some beauty into my life where, sometimes, living in New York on a tight budget away from family and friends, can feel quite lonely. Cheers to you, BF. I <3 you. So, dearly devoted readers, as inspiration, I say, pay it forward. Give a compliment to a stranger or flowers to family/friends, Valentine's Day doesn't have to be a crazy commercial holiday. You never know what a person feels like on the inside and how a small action can mean alot. This really brightened up my day.

I met Matt Schwartz, the photographer behind She Hit Pause Studios at the Brooklyn Flea Market. He was friendly, approachable, and let his photographs speak for themselves at the market. His dreamy, vintage-inspired photographs grabbed me for their haunting, evocative, slightly faded imagery ~ most depict women in portraiture, gazing away at the camera or focusing on graceful off-camera poses. His photographs feel intimate, up close, and as the viewer, you are there experiencing a private moment with the subjects. Smelling Pretty: Thymes Oolong Cassis Candle

Since college, I've been obsessed with fragrances and only recently picked up home sprays as an optimal way to keep my room smelling pleasant when I return home from a hard day's work at school. I discovered that Thymes Oolong Cassis candle is mad addictive

. According to the packaging: "the dark mystique of sweet cassis is stirred with aromatic notes of orange and bergamot and infused with the leaves of the black dragon – oolong tea." I picked it up Alphabets and didn't want to put it down. The floral notes on top of the deep rich tea aroma blends well -- it's calming yet enervating at the same time. I know, an oxymoron. Drinking tea itself can be that way though. My only reluctance was spending $26 on a candle. The fragrant aroma definitely imparts luxury, this ain't your Glades candle here. Since my apartment is small, I'm wary of using candles and found out that it does come in a fragrance home spray which is more optimal. Bonus points for pretty packaging, below.

If you regard shopping as a treasure hunt, you will rummage to your heart's content at the Brooklyn Flea Market. For the Winter, it's residing inside a historic bank building off the Atlantic Stop in Brooklyn which is where I found my booty. Vintage furniture, clothes, knick knacks abound, but I immediately gravitated towards the women's accessories – bags! Bartering is key and you have more leverage to negotiate if you go later in the day or have cash on hand (some vendors do credit transactions). I scored a vintage black Coach bag (school prep style) for $30 (it was missing a silver buckle attachment + I paid in cash).

There! I finally got my weekend art project done. You may recall this. What do you get when you've had Yoshitomo Nara's Oh! My God! I Miss You postcards that you've assembled in white IKEA frames but never got around to mounting? Well, you drag all 9 frames to NYC, dither, and finally get around to mounting it (sans nails) with the mighty help of 3M Velcro! My student apartment room is quite tiny so it's nice to have a major art element draw the eye in (and away from the clutter). All together, I'd say the total amount spent was less than $30 ~ the best part is I can easily dismantle this and take it with me to my next destination.

MoMa: Tim Burton Special Exhibit

For the fantastic, morbid, whimsical, and strange, Tim Burton does not disappoint when it came to debuting his special collection of art, sculpture, and memorabilia at New York's MoMa. Whether it's sketches from his high school years to movie work (Pee Wee's Big Adventures to Nightmare Before Christmas to Corpse Bride), the exhibit is worth taking your time to peruse. Just beware of large crowds! After taking close looks at his personal sketches, you can see influences from other artists like Edward Gorey. If you can't make it to New York, MoMa's Tim Burton interactive exhibit is worth perusing and includes interviews with the spooky director himself. Best? It's free. Tim Burton Exhibit runs at the MoMa from November 22, 2009 – April 26, 2010.

Merry Photography: Toy Camera App for the iPhone

Happy Post Holidays folks! Christmas was quite beachy in South Florida! Since my family and friends don't make a big fuss out of present giving, I was quite surprised to get these comfy pink (memory foam?!) slippers from my mom (at Wal-Mart) and this Badgley Mischka wool scarf muffler from my boyfriend (at Century 21). Did you get anything exciting? I showed my BF around New York City on NewYear's Week and had time to test this iPhone camera app, Toy Camera. From the same maker of the QuadCamera (which I reviewed), this photo app lets me play with color contrast filters, vignetting, square photo formats, etc. If you like lomo photography, retro photography, I would highly recommend checking it out. For the price, there's no real harm involved! Available iTunes for $1.99.

Every four years, I get a thrill out of watching the Olympics (Summer, Winter, it doesn't matter). There's something magic about watching the nations parading in their uniforms, the best athletes competing in the world, and the sports drama that gets to me. As a designer, the sheer amount of promotion materials for the Olympics is dizzying -- merchandising, logo work, posters, etc. the list goes on and on. Can I just say that Virgin America is the coolest airline in the US? Can I get an amen? Richard Branson, I salute you for making flying sexy again. Mmm. Flat-screen mini-TVs, WiFi, leather seats...I wasn't sure if I was in a South Beach lounge or flying cross-continental to my new home.

Speaking of which -- news to my dearly devoted readers -- I'm back on the East Coast! After much packing and huffing, I've headed out to school in New York City! It's been such a shock moving from West Coast Seattle to the frenetic Big Apple. Mama, here, had to go sharpen her claws before she went out apartment-room hunting. After moving in for the kill, she nabbed a tiny shoebox room in an apartment that she hopes she'll be sharing with a (seems to be) sane roommate. I'll be sure to document my decorating process. Let's just say I'll have to be creative (the room is 7x10 ft.). Yeow.

In that time I've been in love with my new iPhone case: JAVOedge iPhone 3G JAVOJelly case in pink! Love the translucent prism backing. It keeps twinkling under the sunlight and the neon pink translucent case is pure eye candy. My boss asked me to test out the colors: Pink and Purple are leading the pack (ha, ha, am I a girl or what? Still I love it when my pink accessories match!)

The other things consuming my attention?

I never thought I'd be suckered into this but this game -- Sally's Spa -- is mad addicting. After I saw fashion blogger, Sea of Shoes, talking about it, I had to try it! On sale for 99 cents and so far, I'm still plugging away at it.

Lastly, my birthday bash was trés fun. My friend, Olivia, flew in from Miami to hang with me and with her help, we cooked up a feast -- a banquet, I tell you! -- for 15 friends! It was exhausting but very memorable. As I mentioned earlier, The Sak Silverlake cross-body bag was my own gift to myself! Love Zappos! See it above with the other things I stow in it (Canon G10 aside). It is THE perfect metro bag. Red leather is awesome, juicy apple red, and you can tell The Sak designers paid attention: plenty of pockets, zipper compartments, comfortable cross-body belt, slouchy leather, etc.

The Sak Handbags Silver Lake Leather Flap Cross Body in Punch. Isn't she lovely? I hope she arrives on my bday in a few days! As a city dweller, I need a stylish durable, leather bag that can take me across town without much fuss, summer, fall, winter, and spring. Easy to reach pockets? Check. Extra long, adjustable strap? Check. Fun color? Check! It was a tossup between the saffron yellow or punch red. Here's me snapping a reminder pic at Nordstrom with the yellow down below. After much agonizing, I went with Punch Red: 1) It should wear more gracefully in appearance then high maintenance yellow. 2) Red is a must-have color accessory in my closet. I was so excited, I went and purchased the Silverlake through Zappos for its free two-way shipping (just in case, I wasn't sold on the punch red in person). As for dimensions, it's pretty spacious, I'd probably be able to cram a netbook there, pens, gadgets, etc: 15" Length, 3" Width, 11.5" Height, 11"!

Best iPhone Camera App: Quad Camera

Playing with this all weekend, Quad Camera by Tatayuki Fukatsu. Quad Camera is a quick iPhone app that lets your iPhone take continuous snapshots to create a single snapshot. Think, like a Holga or a Lomo with included color settings like bright, b/w, vivid, hi-contrast, etc. All this for a $1.99? Booya!

Quad Camera accomplishes what it sets out: super fast shutter time, processing speed, and saturated/vintage finishes to your iPhone photos. It brings lo-fi to your digital photos. I can't afford to purchase a Lomo or a Diana but for my purposes, I love the efficiency (and quality control) of digital cameras. I'm OK with not owning analog cameras (which cost a pretty penny for their lo-fi hipness when you include purchasing and developing film). I also reviewed Poladroid, a desktop app that is a lo-fi tribute to analog film (in their case, Polaroids). Still, Quad Camera isn't perfect -- it has to work with the 1.3 megapixel iPhone 3G camera lenses. Just like with analog cameras, how you play with your natural lighting determines the quality of your shot as you can see in my play snapshots.

The great thing about Quad Camera is its developer, Tatayuki Fukatsu
created a free animated gif app, QuadAnimator, to add liveliness to your Quad Camera shots. Nice!

Taken in 1944 at an internment camp, photographer Russell Lee snapped these young Japanese-American women looking their fashionable best, despite their harsh environments. Quite sobering and quietly empowering; its a testament to the human spirit to the girls kept behind barb wire to carry on with their dignity and fashion. With the recent Inauguration, the closing of Guantanmo, secret prisons, etc. I can only hope that something like this won't happen again. A shoutout to The Coveted for blogging about this.

My latest Japanese fashion magazine find has been ero-kawaii Jelly. Can I say, I just love that name? Jelly, jelly, jelly. It's a fun word to say out loud. I picked it up on a whim at Kinokuniya and love the fashion spreads. Sexier then CanCan and Non-Non, Jelly is the editorial equivalent of Mean Girls to the rest of the J-Fashion pack. Cheeky, fierce, and full of attitude, the Jelly girls are confident in what they wear. Which, judging from their December edition, is short skirts, boots, and chunky knits. Doesn't it snow in Japan? Oh well, suffer for fashion it is then. They even contained a cute lingerie spread (Victoria's Secret Pink type). So, one of the perks of living in Seattle is being surrounded by the tech industry. And working in it. Who would have thought I would have landed a gig working in an online gadget accessories store? Even better, a gadget accessories store that sells iPhone 3G cases? Mwah ha ha ha ha. You can see where this is going.

So in full disclosure, I decided to review my company's iPhone 3G back covers especially since they didn't mind my feedback as a designer-friendly, female blogger. I've catalogued their latest line of 3G iPhone decorative cases that I liked and are good, affordable examples of when iPhone 3G cases match the phone's looks in terms of fashionable, glam, pretty asthetic. As a tech patriot, I'm doing my part to ensure the world is a prettier, friendlier, functionable place. I mean, did you see the examples I highlighted? Do companies really think that females will just like something because its pink? OK, well, I am actually sporting the pink one above and I love it, fyi. But it's actually pretty and I don't feem embarrassed carrying it around--princess image be damned. Need I mention that the JAVOedge 3G iPhone back covers listed below go for $19.95? Not too shabby.

The checker print offers a nice, subtle shimmer contrast to the solid color. Despite the traditional print, the back cover is a win. The design is friendly to girls or guys. My boyfriend commented that the black cover would go well with his Hugo Boss tie and suit.

I love, love, love Love Butter by Carol's Daughter. Let it be known, dearly devoted readers that I'm not the typical Bath & Body Works or Body Shop gal. I loathe fruity/sugary aromas and thick lotions that corporations deem woman-friendly (I'm looking at you Philosophy!). Therefore, I was really taken back when I was given Love Butter as a gift from my brother's girlfriend. Errr....thank you?

I had heard good things about Carol's Daughter in terms of hair care but body stuff? I was skeptical. However, the simple packaging and the actual product won me over. I think I am a convert, seriously.

Carol's Daughter packaging states upfront: paraben-free, no petroleum, mineral oil, or artificial color. Instead, sweet almond oil, beeswax, cocoa butter, and shea butter are primary ingredients. Nice. Plus, it smells cinnalicious! I love cinnamon. The body butter feels like soft wax, very light and easy to apply in layers without making your skin feel gloppy or greasy as other lotions may. A little goes a long way. The cinnamon stick included within the body butter is a nice touch -- it's perfect for the holiday season! It also leaves a nice, subtle scent that doesn't overpower you; it's embarrassing but I keep sniffing my hands to catch the cinnamon scent, mmmm. As an unexpected gift, this was an unexpected delight -- telling y'all, go visit Sephora or your beauty boutique shop and check this body butter out. It is THAT divine!
